I live to eat

I lived through my first year of university eating bubblegum for breakfast. I ate the bare minimum needed to keep my stomach from grumbling loudly in lectures. Lunch was small or skipped entirely. I would head to my afternoon tuts, after making sure I had a stash of bubblegum to keep me going. I would rather spend money on chocolates and alcohol instead of proper food, and anyway, as long as I made it to dinner at the dining hall, that was my main meal of the day and I survived. I ate to live.

As the years went by, I became a little more mature, developed a more refined palate and start to appreciate the finer delights of food. I enjoyed eating out, learning to cook new cuisines and new dishes. I reached the peak of fine dining larny-ness by spending R800 (back in 2008) on one gastronomic meal at an exclusive restaurant. I discovered sweet potato fries, chili infused chocolate, peartinis, pairing wine with chocolate, macaroons and amuse bouche.

Fast forward a few more years. Date night with 1 kid was to fancy restaurants. Family night with 2 kids was to less exclusive restaurants. Dinner at home ranged from spaghetti bol to pad thai to chicken curry to hamburgers and other countries in between. I made sure the kids enjoyed food from countries around the world and am pleased that they have a more discerning palate than I did at their age. They say variety is the spice of life and it is so true when talking about food. So after a week of chicken sandwiches for school lunch, I made pancakes. Cos I was tired of making chicken sandwiches.
